Breakfast at Zaman's November 9, 2008
One of the favourite pastimes of Malaysians is to eat out and breakfast is one of the most popular times to do so! Zaman's is a well-known spot west of Kuantan, close to the airport, which is open only for the breakfast rush, from early morning (dawn) to about 11:00 a.m. Their most popular items are nasi lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk, wrapped in a pyramid-shaped banana leaf and including some spicy sambal, 1/2 boiled egg, fried ikan bilis and a couple of slices of cucumber) and my personal favourite, roti canai (unleavened flaky bread cooked with ghee on a hot plate, eaten dipped in dhal or curry). We ordered "roti telur" which includes an egg cooked inside the roti. Some like it also with onions and chili peppers added. Cost about Rm1.60 or 50 cents!
The series of pictures below were taken by my friend, Monika, from Germany, who has expertly captured on film the art of tossing roti to make it light and fluffy. Roti canai means just that, "thrown" or "tossed" bread! Eight times is about the average.
Below another staffmember gets to work! Notice the big pocket of air in the roti on the left!
Nancy, Hana and I all waiting for our roti while enjoying nasi lemak! See how busy the restaurant is at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
