A Malay Wedding March 15, 2009
On a dull and somewhat rainy Sunday, we drove with Nancy and Gerry across the Kuantan River to the family home of Elly, who was to be married to our friend, Amir, who works at Summermen's Tailors in the MegaMall. Two weeks previous, they had had a similar celebration at the family home of Amir in a different part of town. Food for the occasion was prepared by Amir's sister and other family members, starting around midnight. They had not slept all night! It is customary for Malays to invite everyone they know to a wedding feast...there could be over 1,000 people there over the course of the afternoon feast! Tents were set up to protect the guests from the elements, a DJ was spinning the latest tunes, and everything was beautifully decorated and colour-coordinated.
